The Smart Factory Team at Merkur – Part 1: Bringing Imagination to Life

Working at Merkur also means being part of a multidisciplinary team with a broad range of expertise. The Smart Factory team is no exception. Although smaller in terms of employees, it consists of versatile Merkurians and is continually growing.

The manufacturing world faces a significant technological debt, so needs are exponential. That’s why Merkur’s Smart Factory team has developed a production optimization tool called Synkro. It is a versatile tool that adapts to the reality of each factory and allows it to increase the efficiency of its assembly line by simplifying decision-making processes that ultimately lead to optimization.

However, the Smart Factory team has the skills to revolutionize the manufacturing realities of any company, whether by implementing Synkro or not.

The team is looking for new talent to join its ranks. Is a career within the Smart Factory team right for you? Let’s start by demystifying the specifics of the field.

The reputation of the manufacturing world in Quebec is true; factories are not at the cutting edge of technology, so there is much to be done. Our Merkurians are passionate about innovation and seek to help companies modernize. Whether it’s in web technology, application development, or background communication protocols, the team can transform these outdated technologies into industry models.

Many technological tools are available to the team, but it requires talent that is highly creative, both in technological development and application, as the field evolves rapidly and each situation is unique. The mandate is simple: Create intelligent factory solutions tailored to the human element at their core. Members of the Smart Factory team must be adept at building relationships with their clients to understand all the parameters of a mandate. Each time is a challenge of adaptation, and that’s the most stimulating aspect.

The team develops all technological solutions in-house before deploying them on-site. This team does not use outsourcing models; they operate as a core team, and everyone goes on-site. This approach results in versatile professionals who evolve quickly and can actively participate in the creation and development of Merkur’s offerings.

“It’s a continuous learning process; we strive to ensure that every team member gets to experience everything because that’s what generates the most new ideas, and we welcome all different perspectives. Routine is not common here, and that’s what makes our work rewarding.” – Pierre Lepage, Smart Factory Coordinator.

“What makes this job unique is working in a tangible way. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the real-world impact of interventions; it’s gratifying. One must be comfortable challenging clients’ ways of doing things using ingenuity and simplification, as that’s how the greatest advancements are made.” – Christian Bélanger, Smart Factory Coordinator.

Although there is not yet a completely dedicated program for manufacturing IT (for now!), the team has established integration and training processes to address this. The door is wide open for anyone interested in evolving in the manufacturing world.

“One must have an interest in understanding the manufacturing process because we need to replicate it in terms of programming and behavior to create intelligent dashboards that address the right people. Smart manufacturing is here to stay, and the Smart Factory team has all the capabilities to be a key player in this necessary shift.” – Pierre Lepage, Smart Factory Coordinator.

“We never launch a new team member without a safety net. We advocate for autonomy in a collaborative manner since they have access to all team members and their areas of expertise. We remain involved but do not micromanage. We trust our Merkurians because they evolve within the company with a whole arsenal of resources at their disposal.” – Christian Bélanger, Smart Factory Coordinator.
